I’m sure most of our northern hemisphere friends would laugh at the fuss we are making over our so-called “Antarctic blast”.
Thing is, their homes, clothes and lifestyles are designed to withstand cold weather, while ours aren’t. So what can we do to keep warm, apart from turn on a power-hungry heater or electric blanket?
Clockwise from left:
1: Faux Fur Hot Water Bottle covers at Big W – were $19 now $12;
2. Polar Fleece throws from Kmart, just $5 each;
3. Lavender wheat wrap at Spotlight, (jasmine & chamomile also avail), $16.99.
Here are my five favourite ways to keep warm this winter:
- Take a hot water bottle or wheat bag to bed. I find cuddling up to one of these takes the chill off, particularly when I first slip into bed, and helps me to get to sleep.
- When watching TV or sitting in front of the computer, I have a lap rug – a small polar fleece blanket draped over my legs. It’s amazing the difference it makes!
- Go for a brisk walk! This one is good for your health as well. If I’m really feeling the cold, I’ll jump on the treadmill – by the time I’ve reached 800 metres, I’m ready to lose some layers.
- Indulge in a nice warm bath – not only will it help raise your body’s core temperature, it will also help you relax.
- Make the most of body heat! Snuggle up to your partner in bed, or invite your dog or cat to sit with you while you’re relaxing in front of the TV. Companionable AND cosy!
So tell me – what are some of your favourite ways to keep warm this winter?!

OMG, I’m alternating between hot flushes with the menopause and the super cold frozen to the bone extremities from the thyroid issues. The cold snap here in Perth is not helping.

It’s hard isn’t it Raych? I often wake up drenched in sweat, even on the coldest nights. So I get up to go to the loo or get changed and then freeze to death! Luckily you and I can snuggle up at home even for work!

Great suggestions Janet. I’m a bath fiend so definitely rely on that every night to warm me up! I also love my flannelette sheets in winter!
Janet Camilleri says
You know, I’ve never tried flanelette sheets! Do they really make a difference?

Oh yes it’s freezing and I kind of love that we’re all in it together in so many spots around Australia right now! I use my husband as a hot water bottle haha. It’s perfect snuggling weather and he’s always warmer than me! He’s not so much a fan of me using him to warm my freezing feet, though. Can’t think why! 😉
Janet Camilleri says
Funny thing is, I still wear a little chemise nightie to bed even though it’s freezing. I find body heat is more effective without PJ’s etc on. Though I will admit to wearing a pair of bedsocks much to the hubster’s relief (he’s not a fan of freezing feet either!)

We’ve been using the heater more than normal the last few days. It came on strong again this afternoon, and I’ve been so cold! Layers, a lap rug and heater helps!

Or you could head over to my blog today and soak up the piccies from when we were in sunny and hot Mallorca in Spain 😉

I’m going to heat up my lavender heat pack right now! We’re lucky to have a fairly warm house, but I do like to put the heater on in the lounge in the mornings to take the chill out of the air. Brrr. Bring on the warmer weather 🙂 #teamIBOT

I’m enjoying the cold snap for a change, especially as I always feel warm these days!
Hugzilla says
I just crank up the heater and live in fear of my next electricity bill.
Janet Camilleri says
It’s the Summer bill I fear the most Zilla!
