I Must Confess: I can’t believe I’m posting about politics – but with the Queensland state election set for the end of this month, it’s kind of hard to avoid the elephant in the room.
The political campaigns are in full swing, and everywhere I go I am assailed by election propaganda: TV, radio, internet, street signs, letterbox drops, sandwich boards, trailers, baby kissing in shopping centres, smiling and waving politicians on the side of the road, you name it …
I. AM. SO. OVER. IT!
And I’m sure I’m not the only one.
So here’s a novel idea that would put all that electioneering in its place.
How about BANNING advertising and political campaigns once an election has been announced?!
That way, we could judge all the candidates on their actual performance throughout the term, without the sideshow.
And imagine how the electorates would benefit – three years of hard work in the community by the candidates to show that they are worthy of being elected!
Who’s with me?!

It’s such a waste of paper. Same with the real estate agents always putting flyers in my letterbox. No I don’t want to sell my house!! #imustconfess
Natalie @ OurParallelConnection says
Not only is it a waste of paper but also a waste of OUR MONEY and OUR TIME. It is a pet hate of mine.
Emily @ Have A Laugh On Me says
I’m sick of those annoying emails that I have somehow started getting! Not even sure how they got my address – GRR
Janet Camilleri says
Whew luckily I haven’t received any political emails!
Raych aka Mystery Case says
In other political news, I notice Julie Bishops missing pearl earring has its own twitter account.
Janet Camilleri says
Are you serious?! That’s hilarious!!!
Toni @ Finding Myself Young says
I’m so over it already too. Think of all the money they waste on all the flyers that get thrown out and the boards they wave at me from the side of the road. Seriously whats the point of frantically waving a board at me while I’m driving? I can’t read it anyway and the only thing I notice about it is whether its red or blue, while I’m trying not to be involved in an accident whilst driving past them.

We seemed to have missed a lot of it here, at least the in person stuff. Every second TV ad is one for the election. I do agree with you though that I think it would be good to ban advertising, hell all government advertising. I am sick of ads listing the things the current government has done for us (introducing HECS…which has been around for at least 20 years) when they are just rehashing thing that have been the norm for years.
Zita says
Yep, I am totally with you Janet….OVER it!
They all make promises they don’t keep and I hate the slander ads they show!
Janet Camilleri says
Couldn’t agree more Zita x
Kirsty @ My Home Truths says
Unfortunately banning electioneering would make it hard for those challenging the incumbents to have a chance to share their policies and commitments. I do agree that it becomes very tiresome very quickly. I look back fondly to 2010 when our antenna fell down in a storm and we missed all the drama of the federal election until it was repaired. It was nice to miss the ads and the televised circus for a while!

OMG that is the most sensible and appealling idea I’ve ever heard Janet! You have had a brilliant idea. They should be allowed to make one policy statement and sign it in blood and not be allowed to mention the other party.
