When I saw this photo taken last summer, I knew it was time to buy a new swimsuit.
Why? Because clearly, my bosom wasn’t getting the support it needed from my old cossie. Even the cover up didn’t cover it up – a bit of a fashion faux pas right there.
One advantage of being a bit older and more experienced in the ways of swimsuits, is that I don’t even bother with one piece bathers. I already know they don’t suit my apple shaped body.
There is just something about the glistening fabric pulled taut over my abdomen, that gives me the appearance of … well … an apple. Which is all very well for apples, but not for a human female.
So at least I could eliminate one piece swimsuits from my search.
The Best Swimsuit Style for an Apple Shape
I do have a bikini which I like, but, I’m not entirely comfortable wearing it in public. I think it’s because my white tummy is brighter than any fluorescent lighting – and considering it’s a part of my body I *don’t* want the eye to focus on …
So I was looking for a tankini, the best swimsuit style for a bit of a pot belly an apple shape.
Now it’s pretty rare to find a swimsuit that I actually feel good in – so you can imagine my surprise when I had not one, but TWO finalists in the competition for “Janet’s Swimsuit of the Year 2016”.
I posted the following pic on the Middle Aged Mama Instagram, asking for help to decide:
But I ended up more confused than ever!
The majority of you were very enthusiastic about the colour and pattern of the striped swimsuit on the right. I had to agree – so I bought it.
However, there were also quite a few of you voting for the print swimsuit on the left, citing the more flattering cup shape. There were also a couple of comments noting that it draws the eye to my face, rather than the swimsuit (and the body in it).
So yup, I bought that one too 😉 .
Luckily, Best and Less had a 30% off swimwear sale, so instead of paying $25 each – I came home with two swimsuits for just $35.
At least I won’t feel like a complete frump when I hit the pool or beach in Bali this summer!
Are there any other apple-shapes out there? Have you got a swimsuit ready for summer?!
Linking with Kylie Purtell because I Blog on Tuesdays (IBOT).

I liked the one on the left, so glad you bought that one.
I no longer fit into the swimsuit I’ve had for a few years. It’d barely been worn but I wore it to death when I did water aerobics for several months from June. The material had almost become see-through but it’d become loose since I’d lost weight.
I went to my old apartment complex to catch up with neighbours last Friday and so had to dig out a different swimsuit. As I’ve never been a big beach / swimming person I managed to find one I’d bought in 2003 or so. It was a bit small but I squeezed into it. I’d buy a new one now but no longer have access to a pool so might not use it much…
You look great in both by the way!

You will probably continue to lose weight so your old one will get you through summer most likely, especially if you don’t have a pool. Still, when they are this cheap you could always spoil yourself with a new one!

Bravo Janet! You keep it real. I had to buy new swimwear this year following the weight dropping off me since moving in 2015 and anxiety/IBS changing things for me. However, it took me a while to realise that it was going to stay off and if I wanted to go to the surf, I didnt want to lose my top when a wave hit. I went into a local clothes shop after Christmas and started the search and was surprised (OK shocked) to find I had gone from a Size 20 to Size 16. I bought two pairs of swimmers (one is tankini style) and was pleased that they were on special too.

Twinning! I’m a size 16 too 🙂

I knew you would buy both. When you find a swimsuit that fits, run with it. I am so lucky to work for some luxury German swimwear companies that make the best swimsuits ever and I have a few in my collection. xx N

I had no choice this summer, I have to go for maternity togs because everything is just going to keep getting bigger and bigger lol. Technically I could wear a bikini but after being covered in stretch marks from pupps rash from the last pregnancy aint nobody want to see that. #teamIBOT

Glad you bought both Janet. I always like having two swimsuits. One to dry and one to wear. And you’re going to Bali?! You lucky duck!! xx

I wish I could be so lucky finding swimsuits. I tried one on the other day in Kmart. It looked great on the hanger (it was a tankini as well) but not so good on me. As I’m small busted I find it really hard to find one that doesn’t “swim” on the top half of me! I may have to check out Best & Less myself – what a bargain for two gorgeous swimsuits Janet!
