I Must Confess: recently I’ve discovered that expensive makeup isn’t always the best.
I’ve shared before about Miss 17’s makeup obsession. See those drawers (below)? Filled to overflowing with makeup!
It does come in very handy though – if I run out of any particular product, she always has plenty I can borrow. And if I’ve heard rave reviews about a brand, she has usually not only heard all about it, but has trialled it as well.
Which is why I can confirm that expensive makeup isn’t always the best.
For a long time, Miss 17 lusted after “MAC” cosmetics; to her, they represented the Holy Grail of the makeup world.
Expensive But Disappointing
However she discovered that sometimes products really don’t live up to all the hype, and was disappointed to learn:
- MAC lipstick bleeds – something that has NEVER been a problem for her young lips before, or with any other brand;
- MAC foundation smells like paint. And you put it on your face. Ewwww!
(As you can see though, this hasn’t stopped her from buying more. I told you she had a bit of a problem an obsession!)
Cheap in Price but not Quality
Just for the record, Miss 17 says that when it comes to a great product at a budget price, you really can’t go past:
- Ulta3 lipsticks which retail at under $5 each (I love them too – my favourite is a matte shade called “Rose Bloom”);
- Revlon Colourstay foundation, around $25 (My pick is Garnier BB cream which is even cheaper, about $12 from memory).
So there you have it: expensive makeup isn’t always the best.
Do you like MAC? Or are you a budget beauty like me 😉 ?

This is another area where I fail! I have one concealer, one lipstick, one mascara and some powder. That’s it! I love looking at people who are really good with makeup though. That picture of your daughter is lovely and I LOVE that lipstick shade, but shame about the bleed.

I used to be the same … but I think having a 17 y.o. makeup addict in the house has encouraged me to be more adventurous 😉

I have never used MAC and totally agree with you! I think it goes for all beauty products really, expensive is not always best!

I’m totally budget and until I got that great gift bag from L’Oreal I had hardly anything so I’m set for 10 years now, I kid you not!

What a gorgeous set up your daughter has. I’ve just had a huge throw out of all my make up. Considering it doesn’t last and you only really need so much of the stuff, I was starting to wonder why I had so much.

That’s one thing I’ve noticed with Miss 17 – she actually seems to USE all her makeup, which kinda blows my mind!

I’m definitely a budget beauty. I love Miss 17’s make up collection though! I got a makeover with Napoleon Perdis at the start of the year and the mascara ran like crazy. I was really disappointed with it. I have quite long, thick lashes so mascara that runs is really a pain in the but.

Well Janet I use One Step foundation from Revlon, Maybelline mascara and a Revlon colour stay lipstick on a wand, a bit of cheap brown eye shadow and an old eye liner. I’ve used the same makeup brands for years and the only change I make is to put on a heavier layer at night! I used to buy expensive La Prairie face cream but now I use Ego products. It’s too late for me now. Miss 17 is stunning as usual 🙂

I’m using Maybelline fit me foundation at the moment which is not too expensive and has great coverage. I have a number of Avon lipsticks too which have lasted years and are still as good as the day I bought them. I certainly don’t spend up big when it comes to cosmetics but luckily you don’t always have to!
