Not all that long ago, I prided myself on only owning half a dozen makeup products.
However, with a daughter that is a bit of a makeup addict, it seems to have rubbed off on me. My once small cosmetic kit has now grown considerably! So where did Miss 19’s fascination with all things makeup come from? I sat her down for a bit of a chat …
When did you first start to use makeup?
You used to give me your old stuff, and I had kids makeup too. Then when we moved next door to Myra, we used to love playing with makeup together – she did ballet dancing, so had lots!
I know you used to wear makeup to school even though you weren’t supposed to …
Yeah, I remember in year 9 I started wearing foundation to school – because I had some breakouts, and, all the popular girls wore it. People kept commenting on how pretty I looked when I wore it.
Dad used to get angry when I started wearing eyeliner everyday in grade 9 or 10, I was going through my emo stage. I thought it was cool at the time but now I’m like, “Just no!” (MAM: just quietly, I didn’t like it either but I knew that it would be pointless to make a fuss over it … choose your battles wisely and all that!).
What was the first makeup item you ever bought yourself?
Probably around that time, I bought a show bag at the Ekka that had a Maybelline mascara in it!
Although most girls get into makeup as teenagers, it became an absolute obsession with you …
I bought an acrylic makeup storage container that had room for 24 lipsticks, so of course I wanted to fill it up. I was collecting those Ulta 3 lipsticks, coz they were only about $3 each – and everybody was like, “Wow, look at all your makeup!”. Then I bought more containers and it just went from there 😉 .
So what is your favourite makeup item to collect?
Lipsticks. I have around a thousand. Yes, seriously.
When did you realise it had become a bit of a passion an addiction for you?
My boss used to joke that I’d buy a new makeup product every day! I like cheap things for everyday, and collecting them – but love to splurge on expensive makeup sometimes. I definitely think you can tell the quality of the high end products.
What is your favourite makeup item at the moment (I know it changes regularly!)?
I love the Designer Brands (DB) long wear foundation, it’s not expensive and it’s vegan which makes me happy. The NYX vinyl eyeliner is great for everyday – I rate it “10/10 would recommend” as it’s so easy to use (MAM: maybe for you … LOL).
I know you get stopped often in the street, by people asking about your makeup. Tell us about that!
Yeah I’m always getting told, “Your makeup looks amazing! Did you do it yourself?” This always makes me laugh, as if I would go somewhere specially to have my makeup done just to go shopping!
The other day a girl asked me where I get my eyebrows done, and I do them myself so I was pretty flattered. Then she wanted me to do hers!
I know you’re not keen on doing other people’s makeup, which is quite surprising …
Mum, I’d love to do your full makeup one of these days! You would look amazing. (At hurt look from me): Well, even more amazing!
When people ask me to do their makeup (MAM: her friends ask if they are going somewhere special), it’s nice that they’re trusting me to with it – but to be honest I don’t really like it, I prefer doing my own. I’m surprised they think I’m good enough to do their makeup!
So how did you get so good at applying makeup?
I’m always watching Youtube tutorials, and I’ve practised lots!
What does your boyfriend think of your makeup? I know your Dad always tells me he likes me better without it!
Yeah, he prefers me without it too but he’s good. He’s very accepting of my huge makeup table, and he compliments me nearly every day, on something specific. We’ll be ready to go out and he’ll say, “Oh, I like ‘this’ today.” He looks at the details – like good contouring, or nice brows, which means a lot to me.
I sent him to MAC once to get something for me and he actually did it! That’s a big thing for a guy to go into MAC on his own.
How much makeup do you own?
Far more than you could ever wear in one lifetime! My drawers are overflowing and makeup storage is hella expensive so I need to use what I’ve got before it expires, and before I buy any more.
Now I’m starting a new job as a legal secretary and need to dress differently, I am having fun buying lots of new clothes (MAM: like mother, like daughter …)!
Special thanks to Miss 19 for sharing with us about her makeup habit. So tell me, how much makeup do YOU own?!

I have about three things! I invest in a lot of creams these days though!

I’ve starting using an eyebrow pencil, concealer and highlighter in recent times – largely thanks to Miss 19’s influence!

I love reading about people’s collections /passions. Go, Miss 19!! It’s funny I’m completely opposite. I own a very small amount of makeup, but hardly ever wear it. It’s like my attitude towards ironing : I own an iron, and use it ocassionally, but am quite happy not ironing. Same with make up : ) I own it, use it maybe twice a year, but very happy to go a la natural : )

I go without makeup most of the time too Liz, I work from home so there’s nobody here to see or care (except for the cats LOL). But I do like to wear a little bit when going out 🙂 .

My make up’s expanded since I started blogging. I never used to wear much at all. Then I found BB creams, and I tried more expensive foundations, and now my little collection of sundry items that fitted into a small bag is bulging out of containers in the bathroom cabinet. Like your daughter, my aim is to use it before it expires 😉 I’m nowhere near as accomplished as her though – and I do need to pay more attention (aka learn how to do it) to my thinning brows.
Janet Camilleri says
Well you always look great Jo, so whatever you’re doing – it’s working!

I wear make up to work every day (toner, moisturiser, 50+ face sun protection, foundation, mineral powder, eyeliner and lipstick). My Molescan doctor highly recommends this as I walk to work so it keeps my skin relatively protected from the sun. On weekends it’s generally only the toner, mosturiser and 50+ face sun protection and if I’m going out during the day I add the eyeliner and lipstick. I very rarely wear mascara….mainly because it’s harder to remove and I forget sometimes and rub my eyes. I must say 1,000 lipsticks is impressive. You’d need to use them quite regularly as they definitely have an expiry date.
Janet Camilleri says
Yes I wore mascara this week to a function and blimey, it can be a pain to get off! Think I’ll stick to wearing it for special occasions only 😉

My collection has grown rapidly since I started blogging but to be fair, I have been given, gifted or won a lot of it!! I like trying new things and am always looking for the miracle product that will make me look amazing (still searching).
Janet Camilleri says
Yes it’s amazing how our collections grow when we are blogging about them too x
