It goes without saying that my most treasured pieces of jewellery are my engagement, wedding and eternity rings.
The hubster and I chose the engagement ring together – we found the design we wanted, of a solitaire but it was set in yellow gold. So we had it made up specially in white gold with a diamond weighing in at a third of a carat.
An aside: it seemed quite a big and extravagant gem at the time, but has anybody else noticed that engagement rings tend to boast much bigger diamonds these days? How do young people afford them?
Then we had to keep it all a secret for a couple of months while hubster paid off the layby. He even sold his beloved jestski, just so he could pay my ring off sooner! No wonder I love that man π .
I Must Confess: I used to have a silver friendship ring as well, set with a sapphire and some tiny diamonds, but …
When I was pregnant with Mr 20, my fingers swelled up and so I had to take my rings off. I hid them behind a framed photo on my dressing table – bare millimetres from my crystal ringstand – but at least they were hidden. I never dreamed that I could so nearly have lost them forever.
Alas, after Mr 20 was born and while the hubster was visiting us in hospital, our home got broken into and my friendship ring (which was on the ringstand), a gold St Christopher medallion, and a couple of other small jewellery items, were stolen. Thankfully, however, the thieves DIDN’T find my wedding and engagement rings tucked safely behind the photo frame.
It just so happened that the hubster had to phone and break the news to me in hospital – and it was Day 3 post-birth. As if the 3 day blues weren’t bad enough, now I *really* had something to cry about! I was heartbroken over the loss of my friendship ring, it had huge sentimental value.
Months later, when our insurance company paid us out for our losses, we decided to put the money into one piece of jewellery – an eternity ring. It just seemed fitting – we’d been married 5 years, had just had our first baby, and there was no way we could have afforded it otherwise.
I’ve now been proudly wearing my engagement ring for over 25 years, my wedding ring for over 24 years, and my eternity ring for over 20 years!
Who would believe there is a link between jetskis and engagement rings?! And have you ever been broken into and/or had jewellery stolen?
Linking up with My Home Truths for another Monday confession.
Mica says
Aww no, so horrible that you were robbed – and while in hospital having a baby! π
I never take my most sentimental jewellery pieces off – I wear them every day. When I worried my pregnant hands had swollen up enough that I should probably take my rings off, it was too late to actually get them off! Thankfully it didn’t get too bad and baby arrived soon after.
It’s nice to have got something else pretty and special to wear, to turn a sad event like a burglary into something happier!
Tegan says
Grr to the thieves for stealing your friendship ring but how lucky that you hid your rings without realising!
Kirsty @ My Home Truths says
I too received my eternity ring after I’d given birth to Matilda, 5 years after we were married. I feel slightly bad that I didn’t feature it in my post. It does mean a lot to me – not sure why it clearly didn’t make the grade!!!
Janet Camilleri says
LOL Kirsty I don’t think that it’s because it didn’t make the grade, but because it’s fairly safe to assume most of us would go down that route, you just wanted to be original & different!

My hubby bought me a beautiful diamond ring for our 25th wedding anniversary a few years ago and about six months later when we were travelling through the United States, I lost the diamond out of it. I was devastated to say the least. When we returned home I had it appraised by a jeweller who said that the white gold was porous underneath where the diamond sat and in his opinion was faulty workmanship. To cut a long story short the Jeweller where we originally purchased the ring ended up replacing it free of charge. Very lucky girl!
Janet Camilleri says
Oh wow, lucky indeed! My engagement ring has had a broken claw a couple of times, but luckily the diamond never fell out.
Eva @ The Multitasking Mummy says
I am so thankful that we have not been broken into although I keep hearing about it so often and it does make me nervous! If we’re ever out though, I always have my most valuable items on me.
Janet Camilleri says
We’ve only had our house broken into the once (touch wood). Apparently the thieves left a bit of a mess, but hubby cleaned it all up before I got home from hospital π

I’m ever so thankful that as far as I can recall we’ve not had any burglary. Someone tried to break into our outside laundry by jemmying the lock when all they had to do was turn the handle. It was funny cause hubby was home alone, the rest of us had gone out, the house was silent and some low life’s tried their silliest best to get into our home. Hubby heard them and asked what they thought they were doing. They ran off with hubby chasing them till he thought that it was rather mad to do so!!!
Long May thieves stay away:)
