For whatever reason, it’s great to have a meatless meal every now and then – good for the budget, good for your health, good for variety. Not forgetting that tomorrow is Good Friday, when a lot of people prefer not to eat meat.
So, keeping all that in mind, I’d like to share with you my hubster’s family recipe for Pastizzi – Maltese pasties, with a yummy cheesy filling (I’ve heard peas are also popular – but not with me they ain’t!). As I mentioned in this post last week, hubster’s family originated in Malta.
Ingredients
- 3 sheets puff pastry
- 250g tub cottage cheese
- 1 onion, finely diced
- 125g grated cheese
- 2 beaten eggs (reserve a small amount to brush on pastry before cooking)
- salt and plenty pepper
- 1 teasp curry powder
- good dash worcestershire sauce
- about 1/4 cup plain flour to make sticky consistency
Method
- Mix all ingredients (except pastry) together.
- Cut 4 squares to one sheet of puff pastry (9 if you are doing snack size).
- Put a tablespoon or so of cheese mixture into the middle of each square, then bring sides up and squish together in a submarine shape. Or, if you prefer, you can make them into a neat triangle and gently press the edges together.
- Brush with reserved egg, bake in a hot oven til golden (about 15 mins).
Filling will be very hot so be careful if eating straight from the oven. If there are any leftovers, pop them in the fridge and when required, reheat in the microwave – the pastry goes softer (which I actually prefer) and they are still yummy!
With special thanks to my wonderful mother-in-law for passing on this family recipe.
DONβT FORGET to enter our competition to win a family pass to Room on the Broom, at Redlands Performing Arts Centre! Closing midnight this Saturday 30 March.

I’m a die-hard pastizzi fan – hard not to be when I have grown up with them and seem to be sitting on a dish every corner I turn. Although, I always buy mine- not a fan of making them myself. Has your husband’s family made their figoli yet?

Now that’s something they don’t make. Mind you I should mention that M-I-L is actually Italian so it’s a wonder she makes ANY Maltese recipes – as that’s F-I-L’s side of the family!

Can I make them the day before. I would like to make them for Easter Sunday. Sounds yummy!
Janet says
Absolutely! Also, they freeze well – My M-I-L makes them up then freezes them before baking. Then when she needs some she can pull them out the freezer and bake them π
