So apparently today is National Umbrella Day in the US, but I figured why let a little thing like geography get in the way of a fun blog topic!
As a child, I wasn’t allowed an umbrella (cue the violins).
Something to do with the risk of poking somebody’s eye out, I believe.
Instead, rainy days meant trudging through the school gates in an ugly yellow raincoat, and a rainhat which dripped down the inside of my collar onto my back. The raincoat was the worst; it was made of thick plastic, and torture to wear in the steamy Queensland heat. It might have been raining but that didn’t mean it was cold!
I longed for the day when I would have my first umbrella – preferably one that looked like a ladybug, in bright red and black. Then I would truly be one of the cool kids!
What’s Your Umbrella Style?
These days my umbrella style is bright and cheery! My massive rainbow umbrella does more than keep the rain off – it always makes me smile đŸ™‚ .
For years I carried a plain black umbrella, the collapsible type that is easily stowed in a handbag so I could always be prepared for wet weather. Black was boring, but it meant that the hubster or the kids could use it if necessary, and not be embarrassed by a gaudy or feminine design!
I wouldn’t mind a bubble style (or bird cage) umbrella – like this one from Myer:
It looks like it would do a great job of protecting my hairstyle from the elements; and because it’s clear, I would still be able to see where I was going!
There are so many gorgeous designs to choose from, no matter what your preferred umbrella style. I’m a bit of a fan of florals, though I would happily carry a cat design, or one of the tourist-y looking ones showing the skyline of a famous city – London, Paris, New York …
Umbrellas for Rain and Sun!
But I’ve discovered that umbrellas can be just as handy when it is the sun, rather than the rain, that is beating down!
It might make me look a bit “old lady-ish”, but fashion be damned. If I’m out in the sun with no protection – for example, at a garden or beach wedding – a brolly can be very handy. The young ones might smirk but at least I’ll feel much more cool and comfortable, and won’t get sunburnt!
So tell me, what’s your umbrella style – or your dream umbrella?

Definitely bright and colourful. Now you’ve mentioned it, I’m going to be on the lookout for a nice new bright umbrella for our winter rainy season (we hope – it’s as hot as Hades here right now). I have two beaten up umbrellas which have seen better days.

Does Perth get the rainy season in winter? I didn’t know that … supposedly summer is our rainy season here in Bris-Vegas but we haven’t had much this year.

I have a cow print umbrella. It matches my fox terrier!

How cute! I would love an umbrella decorated with kitties. Or maybe I should get one covered in cats and dogs – for when it’s raining cats and dogs?!

I live in the Pacific Northwest, so the acceptable style for locals is no umbrella at all. And then you pull your jacket uncomfortably over your head.
