Just a sentence a day, they said.
It couldn’t get much easier, they said.
It’ll be fun, they said …
I don’t know if you’ve noticed but journalling just a sentence a day is becoming popular, and I’ve seen it pop up on some of the blogs I frequent – for example, Sizzling Towards Sixty, and And Anyways.
The idea appealed to me so I thought I would give it a go in August and share it here on the blog. Here’s how the month panned out …
A Sentence A Day in August
August 1 – Miss 20 and partner came for dinner so I cooked up that old family favourite ‘silverfish’ (what Miss 20 used to call silverside when she was tiny).
August 2 –
August 3 – One of my lovely sisters gave me eyelash extensions in preparation for the Awards Gala on Saturday night.
August 4 – Totally thrilled to receive a phone call from a web designer about some content I’d just submitted for a client’s website, to let me know that he was “seriously impressed” and will definitely be sending further work my way!
August 5 – The Awards Gala was a great excuse to dress up as a golden girl, although sadly I didn’t win my category.
August 6 – We did some rearranging of our bedroom furniture, and I went grocery shopping.
August 7 – I rang the bank about our savings account and the result is that they are going to pay us an extra 1.5% interest!
August 8 – Yesterday I began my new exercise routine of a morning walk and today was Day 2 – go me!
August 9 – The highlight of the day was meeting a friend for lunch at my favourite local cafe, Bean and Leaf.
August 10 – I was asked for a quote for web content for a business which is in the process of revamping their website – fingers crossed!
August 11 – On my morning walk I saw this headstone, I wonder if the family realises that it has the wrong version of “you’re” on it?!
August 12 –
August 13 –
August 14 – It’s a public holiday for the Ekka in our area today – not that it means much to me, I still did some work – but it was nice to have the hubster home.
August 15 –
August 16 – Today I met with a new client and her puppy, a cute little Norfolk Terrier, at a local cafe – but we forgot that it was a public holiday in Brisbane city so it was a bit of a madhouse and hard to concentrate, particularly with everybody stopping to coo over the dog!
August 17 –
August 18 – Went to the Redland Women in Business birthday lunch at the Alexandra Hills hotel today – I really enjoy meeting and chatting with other women in business – and we were treated to a great guest speaker and a fashion parade.
August 19 – It might have been a Saturday but I still had to amuse myself, as the hubster went to Toowoomba to visit his parents.
August 20 – The early spring clean of our bedroom continues, as today I cleaned out all the drawers (some of them were so full I couldn’t shut them!).
August 21 – I’ve had a really sore neck which I think is from using the CPAP machine, so I ordered a special pillow for CPAP users, online.
August 22 – I’m continuing my morning walks each weekday, to change it up a bit today I drove out to Cleveland Point and enjoyed a walk with water views.
August 23 –
August 24 – Today marks six years since the dreadful day I found my mother’s funeral notice online – and realised she’d actually died 4 1/2 years earlier …
August 25 – Meeting with another local business owner to discuss ways we could collaborate, and we were most bemused when we were gatecrashed by the local member of parliament!
August 26 – Saw something on Facebook about the free Click Digital Expo being held on 1 and 2 September, having heard good things about last year’s event I decided to take the plunge and booked in.
August 27 – Brilliant day of retail therapy with my sis (the other sis to the one mentioned on August 3) and Miss 20 at DFO Airport.
August 28 –
August 29 – Today’s walk was a very pleasant stroll along the beaches at Raby Bay in Cleveland.
August 30 – Lovely email received from a client: “Some companies we get to deal with in business you have to keep chasing them up to try to get anything done … you really care about the businesses you look after.”
August 31 – Had a checkup with my doctor and hooray, my blood pressure is already starting to come down thanks to the CPAP machine, so instead of going on medication we will check in again in 3 months’ time.
As you can see, there were a few gaps in my “A Sentence a Day” diary but I didn’t do too badly – will I do any better in September, I wonder?!
Do you keep a diary or journal?! Does the idea of a sentence a day tickle your fancy at all?!
Linking up with Kylie Purtell for IBOT.
Liz says
That’s pretty cool, and a good way to keep track of life … Did you enjoy it?
I think it tickles my fancy- something achievable too
Janet Camilleri says
I did, and am continuing this month! Some days are really boring though 😉

I like this. Just the thought of writing one sentence to me is actually hard. How do I sum up a day in one sentence. But when you read back over your month, it sounds fantastic #teamIBOT
Janet Camilleri says
I’m glad it sounds fantastic Natalie coz sometimes I struggle to write something as some days are very much a case of “same old, same old”! It’s a great way to help you look for something noteworthy in each and every day – no matter how small.
Bec Senyard says
I like this Janet. Love the honesty of the days where no sentence was written. I’m afraid I’d have a few of those if I did the same thing.
Janet Camilleri says
I did my best, but like any new habit/routine, some days I forgot completely!
Jo Tracey says
You did well! I love how you left the blanks in. Some days it’s seriously hard to think of something that happened. Most of my work day sentences would otherwise read: head down, bum up…boring! Look forward to seeing how September pans out for you.
Janet Camilleri says
Oh Jo, I know them feels SO WELL!
Sue from Sizzling Towards 60 & Beyond says
I love doing this challenge Janet because I enjoy reading back over the month. It is only a sentence (or two sometimes in my case!) and it is amazing what we actually do in a month. Hope you join in September. Thanks for the mention as well.
Sammie @ The Annoyed Thyroid says
So impressed with all your sentences – especially love the false eyelashes, the cute pup and your walks with a view. I don’t think I have the stamina for a sentence a day, but I’m looking forward to your September sentences!
Julia says
This is such a good idea! I think I might have to start doing this x

Hi Janet – I like the idea of having an achievable journal goal. Even the slow days are good when it’s just a sentence and it’s a nice way to remember what you did all year. I usually only keep a journal when I’m overseas and doing something exciting, though I do have a quiet time book that is sort of like a diary in that I record God moments and answers to prayer along with other stuff. Might give the one-sentence thing a try 🙂

I really enjoyed your sentence a day, I hope you keep it up.
