Any other fans of The Block out there?!
Yes, I must confess that it is one of my guilty pleasures. I’m not fussed on how they play up all the drama and conflict, but I do love seeing the room reveals each week, and just what the contestants have pulled off in an amazingly short time frame.
Rumour has it that The Block has just purchased an art deco style factory in Port Melbourne, for the next season’s challenge. Yes boys and girls, The Block: Art Deco Style could soon be headed to a television near you!
I’m confused.
Does anybody else remember how much the judges slammed sister and brother team, Luke and Ebony, last season, for their art deco style?
So what is art deco?
Art deco reached its peak of popularity in the 1930’s, and was considered to be elegant and luxurious, yet at the same time streamlined, even minimalist. Rich colours, metallics and geometric designs were popular. I remember a distinct art deco influence in my grandmother’s house when I was a child, even forty-odd years later.
The judges however felt that the dark jewel tones and dramatic furnishings – totally in keeping with art deco style – chosen by Luke and Ebony, were “heavy” and “depressing”.
Desperate for the judge’s approval, and success in the final auction, the couple succumbed to pressure and turned to more modern styling (can anybody else say “cookie cutter” or even “yawn”?!). It must have worked; they came second overall.
Is this a taste of what we can expect in The Block: Art Deco Style?!
Yet despite all this, the producers have bought a property famed for its art deco style. Did they not get the message? Do they just like stirring the pot?
It will be very interesting indeed to see what The Block: Art Deco Style has in store for viewers!
Are you a fan of The Block? And do you like, love or loathe art deco style?!

I don’t “do” reality TV but I think we need a little bit of all styles, otherwise things look bland as!
Janet Camilleri says
Exactly! Now I’m beginning to think Luke & Ebony were just a bit ahead of their time …

I love the Block too (and MKR). I also love Art Deco and the building styles. I don’t think I would do art deco inside maybe only a few touches with modern but too much art deco can look dated. I suppose it has to be done right. I hope they do it. I’ll be watching for sure.
Janet Camilleri says
Maybe that’s what the judges meant – they didn’t quite hit the mark.
Raych aka Mystery Case says
I don’t watch TV as such but an art deco building make over sounds fascinating to me.
Janet Camilleri says
I hope the rumour is true because I think it would be lovely too – I just find it quite ironic considering how much the judges hated it last season!
Natalie @ our parallel connection says
Lol I got asked to audition for the next season.. Doesnt suit us anymore . Should be interesting though
Janet Camilleri says
Oh my, I’m impressed you even applied! I don’t think I could handle the pressure!
Tegan says
Every season I become less and less impressed with the judges. I wish that they could change them each week, or even have a guest judge each week to inject a bit of flair.
Janet Camilleri says
I agree Tegan – guest judges would be great π .
Kirsty @ My Home Truths says
I am a fan of The Block but I haven’t watched it much in recent times – it really is a bit of the “same old same old”. However I LOVE art deco and would totally come back and at least watch the reveal episodes if they went with that style!
Janet Camilleri says
I didn’t get into it until the last couple of years so haven’t reached overload point – yet! I agree art deco would be fun π
Nicole @ The Builder's Wife says
I am not a huge fan of The Block, mostly because through education, when I watch it all I can see is the shortcuts they take to get to the final product, having said that, I do believe it has opened up the world of renovations to many that have not considered it before. I LOVE art deco style. So uch so, The Builder and I were just talking on the weekend of finding an art deco project to renovate. Thank you for linking up with #HIT
Janet Camilleri says
OMG hubster and I are the same, we can literally see sometimes what a crappy job they are doing to get it done in the short timeframe, wouldn’t want to live with it! I would love an art deco theme on the show, something a bit different π
Bec @ The Plumbette says
I think it will be interesting how each apartment will be styled to suit the building. I’m a fan of the show because I love the reveals but I don’t like the tight timeframes and I do wonder how many corners are crossed. I’m looking forward to this season.
Janet Camilleri says
I’m the same Bec; the reveals are the best part!
